National Italian LifeWatch Workshop on October 9th! More information

On May 26, 2009, there was a meeting in Rome to update on the progress of LifeWatch's preparatory phase. The meeting was organised by Giuseppe Martini, director of the department of Life Sciences of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and member of the LifeWatch Policy and Science Board. Participants to the meeting included representatives of the Italian Ministry of the Environment, of ISPRA (Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale) and of a number of departments of the National Research Council dealing with issues related to biodiversity.

The participants to the meeting discussed the possibility to form a group aimed at defining the Italian contribution to LifeWatch, involving representatives of national administrations such as the research ministry, the ministry of the environment, the ministry of agriculture, and regional institutions, in particular the ones more active on issues related to biodiversity.

At the conclusion of the meeting it was decided to organise in early autumn a national information day on LifeWatch, inviting as many stakeholders as possible from all sectors operating in biodiversity related activities.

Structures providing policy-relevant advice on infrastructures

A new procedure for the selection and evaluation of Research Infrastructures was developed. A call for ideas aiming to build research infrastructures in Italy was launched early in January 2008 by the Ministry of University and Research. A National roadmap is expected to be in place in 2008.

Policy development with respect to Life Watch

A proposal for a national infrastructure related to LifeWatch was submitted by the National Research Council of Italy (dept of Life Sciences) in coordination with Corpo Forestale dello Stato (Servizio CONECOFOR), the Ministry of Environment (DG Protezione della Natura) and the Natural History Museum at the University of Florence.

National Life Watch network

Several meetings with representatives of the EU Networks of Excellence represented in Life Watch resulted in a working group which may lead to an Italian Life Watch network.
