The LifeWatch Construction Database PDF Print

The LifeWatch Construction Database supports contributing partners in the distributed construction of the research infrastructure. As the preparatory project is still ongoing, the construction database is still evolving (a new update will be available later in the year). The present version of the LifeWatch Construction Database shows countries, organisations, research initiatives and networks, etc. how to contribute to the construction of LifeWatch.

Learn how to contribute to the construction of the LifeWatch Research Infrastructure.

The construction database is organised in three layers:

  • 11 Construction Projects, describing the main categories of work (e.g. legal, technical, financial), each one with
  • Construction Components, describing clusters of activities in a Project, that contain
  • Construction Issues, describing a series of tasks resulting in a deliverable.

The 11 Construction Projects - updated Jluy 2010 - are, in alphabetical order:

LifeWatch will provide the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure for biodiversity research in Europe. The present status of the construction process of this infrastructure is documented of the basic views and decisions concerning the structure and design policies of the LifeWatch ICT infrastructure. Detailed discussions concerning the strategic, technological, and organisational aspects are provided in separate dedicated documents. These are:

  1. "Thinking Globally, Acting Locally" - European Strategies For Local Implementation (abstract, full document (pdf, new window))
Outlines the general strategy of the construction planning
  2. LifeWatch Showcases (abstract, full document (pdf, new window))
Provides "showcases" for particular biodiversity research themes. Used to derive requirements for biodiversity research capabilities.
  3. Status Report on Infrastructures in Biodiversity Research (abstract, full document (pdf, new window))
Provides an overview of all stakeholders and the status of all relevant current and emerging technologies.
  4. LifeWatch Reference Model (abstract, full document (pdf, new window))
Acts as a backbone for construction to which the provided infrastructure should conform.
  5. Conceptual Design for a LifeWatch Workbench Portal (abstract, full document (pdf, new window))
Imagines the look and capabilities of the future LifeWatch Biodiversity Workbench.
  6. Virtual Collaborative Networks Supporting LifeWatch R&D Infrastructure (abstract, full document (pdf, new window))
Provides a framework for inter-organization collaboration in biodiversity domain.

These documents in combination define a blueprint for the construction of the LifeWatch infrastructure. They lay down the details for an incremental implementation of the technical infrastructure of LifeWatch with alternative software engineering solutions and required additional scientific word and it provides an estimation of development costs through various construction stages.
