RvLab VRE

The RvLab makes use of "R" which is a statistical processing environment widely used by scientists working in many biodiversity related disciplines. It supports an integrated and optimized (in respect to computational speed-up and data manipulation) online R environment. This vLab tackles common problems faced by R users, such as severe computational power deficit. Many of the routines operating under the R environment, such as the calculation of several biodiversity indices and the running of the multivariate analyses, are often of high computational demand and cannot deliver a result when the respective datasets are in the form of large matrices.

Phytoplankton VRE

Phyto VRE

The LifeWatch e-Infrastructure has realised the Phytoplankton Virtual Research Environment (Phyto VRE), a collaborative working environment supporting researches on phytoplankton assemblages and their relative structure, organization and ecological function.

Phytoplankton plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems because it accounts for most of global primary production and affects the biogeochemical processes, trophic dynamics and biodiversity architecture.

As an outcome of the 2nd LifeWatch e-Infrastructure Construction Operational Meeting in Granada in early 2014, a LifeWatch Marine Meeting was organized from 3rd-5th of June 2014 at the Hellenic Centre of Marine Research (HCMR) in Crete. This meeting was attended by representatives of regional LifeWatch projects in Spain, Italy, Greece, Sweden, Belgium and the EU funded projects BioVeLMicroB3ViBRANT and EMODnet.

During this meeting it was discussed how several marine resources, data bases, data systems, web services, tools, etc. could be brought together into one marine virtual research environment (VRE). The outcome of these fruitful discussions is this portal, which can be considered as a first bottom-up development demonstrating potential and capability emulating the LifeWatch objectives. For future versions of the marine VRE we aim to further increase the integration and interaction between the presented components.

The LifeWatch Alien Species Virtual Research Environment (AS-VRE) has been built and equipped in order to developing systems that support the scientist's work for experimental researches on alien species arrival and spread into different types of ecosystems (aquatic and terrestrial). The AS-VRE is an example of the types of scientific studies that researchers on biodiversity and AS could undertake.
