Marine workshop: integration is the priority for building a virtual research environment

A LifeWatch technical scientific workshop was successfully held from 3rd to 5th of June at the premises of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research in Crete. The meeting, organised by the national node of LifeWatch in Greece, was targeted to the development of a Marine Virtual Research Environment in the framework of LifeWatch ESFRI. More than 30 participants, representing 7 countries and 14 institutes convened to present their latest relevant developments, discuss next steps and explore further collaborations.

In that respect, the meeting was atended by scientist from Spain, Italy, Greece, Sweden, and Belgium as well as representatives from some EU funded projects: Biovel (Biodiversity Virtual e-Laboratory), EMODNet (the European Marine Observation and Data Network), MicroB3 (Marine Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology), and Vibrant (Virtual Biodiversity). Consistent to Hellenic Center's focus on the marine type of environments, emphasis was given in connecting the marine data systems and workflows through existing technologies and developments.

During the workshop the experts laid the foundations for the creation of a marine virtual research environment boosting the integration of the existing services and tools. They and reach an agreement about developenment priorities for 2014 and 2015, like the creation of a biosensor collaborative platform for automated processing of plankton, e-DNA and other marine living, as well as traking data. One must is the integration of the existing marine virtual labs using an specific website that should become operational before November 2014.

Furthermore, another task is to make availables for the European research community services provided for species traits. In addition, LifeWatch related projects such as MicroB3, MarineTLO (top-level ontology for the marine domain), Polytraits (a database on biological traits of polychaetes), and SOCIB (Balearic Island Coastal Observing and Forecasting System), where also presented.
