LiDAR sensors installed on airplanes and helicopters are used in airborne laser scanning (ALS) surveys to capture information on terrain and human infrastructure, but also allow us to quantify vegetation structure. Broad-scale ALS data are becoming increasingly available from a number of countries across the world, but processing the massive 3D point clouds from ALS surveys into LiDAR metrics for ecological applications is computationally demanding and challenging. The LiDAR vLab uses a high-throughput workflow called “Laserfarm” for quantifying ecosystem structure from airborne laser scanning point clouds. The Jupyter environment and its extension toolkit provided by the LiDAR vLab allow users to containerise, manage and execute customised workflows, supporting the processing of massive amounts of LiDAR point clouds into geospatial data products of ecosystem structure.
