RDA 15th Plenary Meeting

rda 15th plenary meeting

Melbourne, Australia, 18-20 March 2020. The Research Data Alliance (RDA) 15th Plenary Meeting, with the theme “Data for Real-World Impact”, will take place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC). The event will be hosted by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) with the support of the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC).

As one of the founding regions of RDA in 2013, Australia has always been a strong supporter and driver of RDA. Organising the Plenary meeting in Australia offers regional researchers and data professionals an opportunity to engage and work with the RDA community, as well as offering the international data community the unique chance to learn more about the exciting activities and developments in the Australian data landscape.

The RDA Plenary Meeting will be organised in conjunction with the annual Collaborative Conference on Computational and Data Intensive Science (3CDIS) taking place in Melbourne on 16 – 18 March 2020. C3DIS aims to build a national community of practice of scientists, researchers, and computing, data and information management specialists. All of these professionals share a common interest: the production of breakthrough science outcomes that require large scale, complex computations and analyses to be carried out over massive data sets.

ENVRI Open Science Trek campaign

Online, 5–8 May 2020.  The ENVRI community has organised a virtual campaign to replace the originally planned Townhall meeting at #EGU20. Come to the ENVRI Twitter or YouTube channel, or here on the website each day from Tuesday 5 to Thursday 7 May at 1:00pm CEST and discuss with us questions, like:

• Who pays in the Open Science environment?

• What does Open Science mean for your career?

• What are the technological challenges of Open Science?

• What does the future hold for scientific data?

One video will be released each day to probe into the key issues in Open Science in Geosciences:

• On Tuesday May 5th, Wouter Los will talk about the idea of COMMON DATA MARKETPLACE

• On Wednesday 6th, Sarah Callaghan, the editor-in-chief of the open access journal Patterns, will speak about the OPEN ACCESS BUSINESS MODEL

• On Thursday 7th, Daniele Bailo will talk about the TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGES OF OPEN SCIENCE.

Come and join in, question and discuss the key issues you have with open science in Geosciences at ENVRI community Twitter channel or under each video published on the ENVRI YouTube channel.
You will be able to raise any question or start a discussion from 1pm CEST after the videos are published – the speakers and other ENVRI colleagues will be eager to talk to you and answer your questions.

Postponed: Empowering Biodiversity Research Conference II

Empowering Biodiversity Research Conference

Due to the current global COVID-19 crisis, the Empowering Biodiversity Research Conference has been postponed to 2021.

Tervuren, Belgium, 14-15 May 2020.  Five years after the “Empowering Biodiversity Research” conference organized in May 2015, we would like to invite to the 2020 Conference on Biodiversity Informatics, for a new journey into the world of biodiversity data standards and tools. Projects that started five years ago are about to deliver what was promised and many new biodiversity informatics related projects have launched since then. Concepts such as Open Data, Open Access and Open Science are now increasingly recognised across disciplines and are changing the way science is conducted.

The time has come to find out what happened since our last conference! Let’s also look together at what is likely to happen next in the world of Biodiversity Informatics! So get ready for this fascinating conference which will take place at the AfricaMuseum, Tervuren, Belgium, on 14 and 15 May 2020. The objectives of the conference are to:

  • Explore and discuss the opportunities and strengths related to Biodiversity Informatics and Open Data & Open Science
  • Learn about Belgian research projects using biodiversity informatics tools to enhance their results
  • Network with fellow biodiversity scientists.

LifeWatch Belgium is one of the organisers, along with the Belgian Biodiversity Platform, the AfricaMuseum, the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO), the Meise Botanic Garden (Meise), Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Université of Liège (ULiège), the VIB and the Belgian Science Policy Office (Belspo).

European Research Infrastructures for a Smarter Future

Online, 15 May 2020. Research infrastructures are key elements in providing the necessary data and services for European scientists to conduct cutting-edge research in a variety of scientific fields and for European business to develop new products and services. They give us tools to understand better our universe, our planet and ourselves as humans.

The overall objective of this fully digital European Research Infrastructures for a Smarter Future conference, hosted by the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the EU, and open to all participants, is to explore the potential of European Research Infrastructures to make a meaningful impact on the European strategic agendas and identify the ways in which this could be achieved.

The Smarter Future conference will provide a platform for discussion and dialogue between policy, research and industry stakeholders on the changes that are necessary to address the big challenges of our times. It will also increase the visibility of opportunities provided by Research Infrastructures and promote partnership between business and academia.

Registrations are now open for anyone who wants to help provide a new impetus for European research infrastructure policy, and support the full realisation of the potential of the European Research Area to drive the necessary changes in our economy and society.  Click here for ESFRI website and here for the full agenda.
